Brooklyn Renaissance

Scope: Decorative Renovation

Location: Brooklyn, NY

Photographer: Nick Glimenakis

This project began with a clear and beautiful intention: to design a home that celebrated the Harlem Renaissance. From the very first conversation, when the clients shared their desire to display iconic photographs—including a portrait of [Artist Name] alongside legends like Ella Fitzgerald—and their decision to forgo a TV in the Living Room, we knew this space would be something special.

Once the palette came into focus, we leaned all the way in. The top quarter of the walls were painted in Farrow & Ball’s India Yellow, wrapping the room in marigold warmth. On the banquette wall, we designed a custom circular motif that echoes the energy of the space, paired with a classic tulip base oval dining table for a touch of softness and shape.

In the Kitchen, we updated the cabinetry with solid-colored panels for a cleaner look, extended the peninsula with a waterfall edge to seat three comfortably, and laid the foundation for a bold, bohemian color story.

The Living Room centers around a deep teal sectional, grounded by a gallery wall featuring Harlem Renaissance-era portraits—a living tribute to the art, culture, and legacy of the period. On the adjacent wall hangs a powerful piece by artist Ashley Johnson, adding a contemporary counterpoint. The room is finished with layers of soft, cozy decor, a vintage mid-century cabinet, and a distinct bar area that brings both character and function.

The result is a space that’s soulful, expressive, and deeply personal—honoring the past while embracing the creative energy of the present.
