This Tarrytown library was ready for a refresh—and our client wanted it to feel intentional, layered, and worthy of the home’s historic charm.
Wallpaper played a starring role in the transformation, bringing richness and depth to a room meant for reading, thinking, and retreating.
One of our first design moves was to address a clunky, unused piece of millwork beside what is now a desk. Instead of tearing it out, we proposed faux panel doors to make it look like a built-in storage piece—seamlessly integrated and far more functional. We reimagined the original open shelving system by keeping display shelves above and introducing closed cabinetry below to create visual balance and hidden storage.
At the heart of the room sits an open-back daybed, designed for cozy reading moments and framed by the room’s most striking feature: a full wrap of iconic William Morris wallpaper on the walls and ceiling. To further enhance the enveloping feel, we wallpapered the ceiling in a textured jute by Phillip Jeffries, adding depth and softness overhead.
To complete the space, we added a custom desk opposite the bookcases, reupholstered an existing lounge chair in fresh fabric, and kept the client’s beloved drop-leaf table in the corner—proof that thoughtful updates don’t always mean starting from scratch.
The result is a warm, timeless library layered with character and comfort—a space to slow down, curl up, and get lost in a good book.
